A Night of Horror International Film Festival confirms virtual platform and teases films ahead of program launch

For its thirteenth edition, A Night of Horror is partnering up with exciting new streaming platform Xerb, to delight fans nationwide with a thrilling program of dark genre cinema from down under and around the world, 18 - 31 October. 

“I’m not superstitious,” says Festival Director Bryn Tilly, “This year is our lucky 13th! It’s vital to maintain such an important cultural event, and with Xerb we are able to expand our reach, our program, and duration. No mutant virus will stop A Night of Horror! Be afraid, be very afraid!”

The features program has thirteen international and Australian premieres, including Addison Heath & Jasmine Jakupi’s wild and blackly comic slasher MY CHERRY PIE as the festival’s “Opening Night”, the sinister supernatural spookery of SUNOD from festival alumni, Carlo Ledesma (THE TUNNEL), the Schuyler family’s eerie lockdown nightmare, RED RIVER ROAD, Keene McRae’s brutal noir-esque debut, SHOT IN THE DARK, the hypnotic, escalating paranoia of Johannes Grenzfurthner’s MASKING THRESHOLD, and the immensely entertaining documentary THE BRILLIANT TERROR, focusing on grassroots horror filmmakers and fans in the US. 

Thirty-seven sensational short films are spread across two International Shorts Showcases and an epic Australian Shorts Showcase, and, last, but not least, an exclusive live talk with Q&A from the local legend that is Kiah Roache-Turner (WYRMWOOD), on the hard fun of DIY horror!

A Night of Horror presents The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne, 40th anniversary, at 15th Sydney Underground Film Festival.

The 1981 cult fave The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne, directed by the late, great Walerian Borowczyk (Immoral Tales, The Beast), gets the special anniversary treatment at this year’s virtual edition of the Sydney Underground Film Festival, September 9th until 26th, on the Eventive platform.

Curated and introduced by ANOH Festival Director, Bryn Tilly, the stunning 2k restoration will be presented in its original, uncut form, in the French-language (and English subs), eager to shock and thrill a whole new audience. 

An erotic and nightmarish re-imagining of the classic 19th Century Robert Louis Stevenson novella, this is as ripe and perverse as they come! The legendary Udo Kier plays the intrepid doctor, with Marino Pierro as his curious fiancée, and Gérard Zalcberg as the wicked, feral Mr. Hyde. 

What begins as an elegant Victorian engagement soirée, with Patrick Magee and Howard Vernon as guests, soon descends into rape and murder. A vicious sex maniac has infiltrated the house and is running amok. Soon enough Dr. Jekyll reveals his insidious secret.

A Night of Horror International Film Festival announces new festival dates, virtual event, and program reveal date for 2021

Important announcement!
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown of Sydney, we have made the decision to make the 13th edition a virtual event. 

The festival will now stream on-demand from Monday, October 18th until Sunday, October 31st, 2021.

The full Official Selection, screening program, and virtual event details, including ticketing and in-season festival passes, will be revealed on Monday, September 20th.

An Early Bird Devours the Worm all-access pass will be available for two weeks from Monday, September 20th. 

The screening program will also be viewable as an interactive, downloadable digital flipbook.

A NIGHT OF HORROR & FANTASTIC PLANET 2017 WINNERS!

Presented by Deadhouse Films, the 11th annual A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Fantastic Planet, Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival showcased a stunning array of the latest and greatest horror, sci-fi, thriller, fantasy, and cult films from around the globe. Here are the winning films from the 2017 event:

Norbet Keil's gorgeously gruesome body horror REPLACE took A Night of Horror's “Best Film” award. While Brazilian filmmaker Samuel Galli captured “Best Director” for his confronting serial killer / supernatural chiller OUR EVIL. That film's mesmerising lead actor, Ademir Esteves, won the award for “Best Male Performance”. And the “Best Female Performance” award was given to Dafna Kronental for her stunning performance in the beautifully lensed and terrifying Australian outback nightmare THE MARSHES. A Night of Horror's “Independent Spirit Award” for a feature film was captured by the riotous Ozploitation flick MUSCLECAR.

But the biggest winner of the festival was the haunting Australian/Albanian co-production BLOODLANDS. The mesmerising film focuses upon a traditional Albanian family, coming to terms with modernity. But their domestic problems seem insignificant when the family find themselves drawn into a horrific blood feud with a witch and her kin. BLOODLANDS took out three of the fest's major awards: “Best Foreign Language Film”, “Best Australian Film”, and “Best Australian Director” for Steven Kastrissios.

Fantastic Planet Film Festival's top honour, “Best Film”, was won by the terrifying yet deeply moving post-apocalyptic thriller HOSTILE.  The film's French director, Mathieu Turi also won the award for “Best Director”, which, in a split jury decision, was shared with Uganda's Nabwana I.G.G., director of the hilarious action adventure, and international festival hit BAD BLACK. While the fest's “Independent Spirit Award” was captured by the high-octane thrill-ride SIXTY MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT. Robert Nolan, the film's lead, and one of the brightest lights in Canada's vibrant acting scene, took the “Best Male Performance” award in a unanimous jury decision.  And genre favourite, the always incredible Dee Wallace won "Best Female Performance" for her role in the dark and disturbing AYLA.

A Night of Horror's “Best Short Film” was awarded to the pulse-charging survival horror LEVEL. The festival's “Best Animated Short Film” award was won by the brutal French anime FIERCE. While atmospheric and masterful SOUND FROM THE DEEP from Finland won “Best Lovecraft Short Film”. The audience choice award for “Best Australian Short Film” went to the chill-inducing I'M SORRY MUMMY. And “Best Music Video” was awarded to the twisted MUUY BIIEN - MORAL COMPASS from director Benjamin Roberds. The festival's inaugural “Best Web or TV Content” was taken by the nightmarish US short STEREOSCOPE. And the fest's “Independent Spirit Award” for a short film went to the shocking and bloody Canadian short STUDDED NIGHTMARE.

Fantastic Planet's “Best Short Film” was taken by the Spanish techno-terror thriller iMEDIUM. While “Best Animated Short Film” was won by the enchanting CORKY from the USA. Audience choice award for “Best Australian Short Film” went to the hilarious social satire DIRT TIN. The winner of “Best Music Video” was director Kim Pommel’s visually captivating A LOVE LIKE PI - JACK AND THE GIANT. The Finnish time-spanning sci-fi web series END UNSUNG won “Best Web or TV Content”. And Fantastic Planet's “Independent Spirit Award” for a short film was awarded to the twisting sci-fi thriller REM from New Zealand's April Phillips.

Both festivals also host screenplay competitions. The winner of A Night of Horror's feature screenplay competition was FRIDAY NIGHT FRENZY by Richard Stringham. The competition's 1st runner-up was Neil Chase's DEAD STRAYS. The 2nd runner-up was CLARITY by Ariana Kenny. A Night of Horror's short screenplay winner was LOST MAN by Guy Harvey. That competition's 1st runner-up was Noah Pfister's ROADKILL. And the second runner-up was CANNIBAL MOTHER by Jacob Schefer.

The winner of Fantastic Planet's feature screenplay competition was TRANSCARLET by James Ross. The 1st runner-up was STORMCATCHERS by Mike Donald. Ana Ziegle Loes' F7/F2 captured the 2nd-runner up spot. Fantastic Planet's short screenplay competition was won by Daniel Earney and Dio Traverso's JACK RABBIT. While AN IRON SHELL OF RITUAL by Jeff Racho took the competitions 1st runner-up spot.  And the competition's 2nd runner-up was THE INFINITE AND THE DIVINE by Krystyna Łoboda and Derek Weissbein.

FULL PROGRAM ANNOUNCED & TICKETS ON SALE FOR A NIGHT OF HORROR / FANTASTIC PLANET 2017

Presented by Deadhouse Films, the 11th annual A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Fantastic Planet, Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival announce full joint program, and open ticket sales for the 2017 event today!

The festivals will run concurrently at Dendy Cinemas Newtown, from November 29 to December 3, 2017.

The event's opening night film is the Sydney premiere of BLOODLANDS from Australian writer/director Steven Kastrissios (THE HORSEMAN), followed by a Q&A.

BLOODLANDS

“A Night of Horror hosted the Sydney premiere of Steven's directorial debut THE HORSEMAN at the festival in 2010”, says programming director Dean Bertram. “The film won four of the festival's major awards that year, and its sold out screening was a favourite of the jury and audience alike. Needless to say we are delighted to have his highly anticipated sophomore film BLOODLANDS open the festival in 2017. Shot and set in Albania, the film tells the tale of a traditional family's blood feud with a witch and her violent clan. And it just oozes atmosphere, mythology and palpable dread.”

Some of the other titles that the festival is announcing today, include:

ALYA (Dir: Elias, USA).  Haunted by the mysterious death of his four-year old sister, Elton (Nicholas Wilder) brings her back to life thirty years later as an adult woman. Starring genre royalty Dee Wallace (E.T., CUJO, THE HOWLING), and Tristan Risk (AMERICAN MARY, FATHER'S DAY, MANIA), this movie mixes eroticism with repulsion and familial love with terrifying obsession. Director Elias (GUT, THE HORROR OF H. P. LOVECRAFT) has crafted a haunting chiller which is both genuinely moving and deeply disturbing.

BORLEY RECTORY (Dir: Ashley Thorpe, UK). This spine-tingling film chronicles the real life story of “The most haunted house in England”. Narrated by Julian Sands (WARLOCK, GOTHIC, LEAVING LAS VEGAS), and starring Reece Shearsmith (THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, SHAUN OF THE DEAD), BORLEY RECTORY features a mesmerising combination of live action and hauntingly animated photographs from the period. It is unlike any movie you have seen before.

SIXTY MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT (Dir: Neil Mackay, Canada). On New Year's Eve 1999, a construction worker come doomsday prepper (Robert Nolan), finds himself starring on a bizarre game show that kills it's contestants. He has just sixty minutes to survive, or die trying. With a group of heavily armed men descending on his farmhouse, every second counts. Fresh from its raved about world premiere at Toronto After Dark Film Festival, SIXTY MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT is loaded with the type of action that harkens back to the high octane, high body count classics of the 80s and 90s. Prepare to be blown away!

A NIGHT OF HORROR / FANTASTIC PLANET 2017 - FIRST WAVE ANNOUNCED

Presented by Deadhouse Films, the 11th annual A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Fantastic Planet, Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival announce the first programming wave for the 2017 event.

The festivals will run concurrently at Dendy Cinemas Newtown, from November 29 to December 3, 2017.

“The festivals' programmers are delighted to announce this stunning array of frightening, bloody, and awe-inspiring cinema from around the world,” says programming director Dean Bertram. “This first wave announcement showcases an international cinematic buffet. BAD BLACK (dir: Nabwana I.G.G., Uganda) Get ready Commandos! The most original and surprising hit of the festival season soon invades Sydney! BAD BLACK is a thrill-packed, laugh-filled, self-deprecating action epic: made with no budget in Wakaliwood - Uganda's answer to Hollywood. And at a time when an endless string of studio produced spectacles leave one feeling numb, this film overflows with a fresh infectious energy that reminds even the most jaded cinephile why they fell in love with movies in the first place. Whether you've yet to experience the insane delights of Wakaliwood, or you're craving your latest fix, here is your chance for Supa Action!

BAD BLACK

BODIES (dir: Tom Large, UK) After serious money troubles, a married couple agree to take part in a bizarre medical experiment. From festival alumnus Tom Large (BEYOND) comes this twisting sci-fi thriller that will have you as unbalanced and shocked as the film's protagonists. Fans of smart sci-fi (think PRIMER meets GATTACA) will get their speculative fix from this thought provoking gem.

BODIES

CANNIBALS AND CARPET FITTERS (dir: James Bushe, UK) A ragtag group of carpet layers are sent on a job to an old English country house in the middle of nowhere. They soon discover it's a trap set up by a savage cannibalistic family. The carpet fitters must fight for their lives or risk ending up as the evening's dinner.  Horrific delights abound in this gore filled dish, that tastes like a wickedly decadent blend of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and THE TEXAS CHANSAW MASSACRE.

CANNIBALS AND CARPET FITTERS

HOSTILE (dir: Mathieu Turi, France) Xavier Gens (FRONTIER(S), THE DIVIDE, HITMAN) presents this post-apocalyptic chiller grounded in character and an emotionally compelling story. Lone survivor Juliette (Brittany Ashworth) fights to survive against hunger, thirst, a broken leg and disturbing creatures that only come out at night: all the while haunted by memories of the most important relationship from her past. Imagine PITCH BLACK meets THE OMEGA MAN mixed with a dash of TV's LOST, and you have an idea of the tone of this film's terrifying imagined future, and it's very real and contemporary heart.

HOSTILE

THE MARSHES (dir: Roger Scott, Australia) Deep in a remote marshland, three young biologists (Dafna Kronental, Sam Delich, Mathew Cooper) conduct research. But when they encounter evil, science ends and survival begins. A Night of Horror is delighted to present the Australian premiere of this pulse-charging, clever, and timely addition to the annals of Australian outback horror.

THE MARSHES

MUSCLECAR (dir: Dwayne Labbé, Australia) The beautiful and obsessive Bambi (Jacinta Stapleton) blows her dough buying the car of her dreams, a lipstick-red, 1968 Dodge Phoenix. When she can't afford to run it she cooks up a harebrained scheme to bring her car to life. Using ancient Voodoo incantations, the blood of drunkards, and an ox heart, we discover that a girl can love her car too much. This live action film - with dollops of gorgeous and gory animated comic-panelled transitions from director and animator Dwayne Labbé (THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW, ALADDIN, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2) - is a bloody hilarious ride, and the best unabashedly Ozploitation flick the festival's programmers have seen in years. MUSCLECAR

OUR EVIL (dir: Samuel Galli, Brazil) A shocking and utterly original film, which tracks the extreme deeds a man with spiritualist powers will commit to protect his daughter's soul from the demonic entity destined to consume her. Whether you're a fan of brutal cinema or of terrifying supernatural tales, this film delights all morbid appetites.

OUR EVIL

REPLACE (dir: Norbert Keil, Germany/Canada) Young and beautiful Kira (Rebecca Forsythe) is afflicted with a strange disease: her skin starts to age rapidly, dry out and crumble away. When she discovers that she can replace her own skin with somebody else's, she has to choose: watch her own body wither and die - or give in to temptation - whatever the price. Genre favourite Barbara Crampton (RE-ANIMATOR, WE ARE STILL HERE, YOU'RE NEXT) captivates in her most disturbing role to date in this gorgeously repulsive addition to the body horror subgenre (co-written by Richard Stanley HARDWARE, DUST DEVIL, THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU).

Actor and filmmaker Adrian Țofei - the creator and star of A Night of Horror 2015's "Best Film", the critically-acclaimed BE MY CAT: A FILM FOR ANNE - has just days remaining on the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for his next production: The apocalyptic thriller WE PUT THE WORLD TO SLEEP, starring Erisse Peterson and Duru Yücel Țofei.

Directed, produced and written by Tofei, the ambitious movie is about two idealistic women who embark on a mission to save the world from itself by bringing everything to an end. Jay Sorensen and Danha Yunes are attached as associate producers.

Even if the campaign does not reach it's minimum $100,000 goal, Tofei promises: "We'll make the movie no matter what, by finding alternative ways of financing. Your contributions won't be lost! For authenticity, he plans to direct the film with his method of controlled improvisation, just like he did when making BE MY CAT: A film called "terrifying" by the Austin Chronicle, "the most revolutionary found footage film since The Blair Witch Project" by ANOH, and included in Dread Central's Top 5 Best Horror Movies of 2016 and Audiences Everywhere's Top 50 Best Horror Movies of the 2000s.

Tofei says: "No writer can 100% imagine how an event or discussion evolves in real life, without putting himself in those situations. And also the actors would know in advance what will happen and what they have to say, they won't discover everything during filming, limiting the naturalness. And we don't want just good acting, we want audiences to be blown away by the film's authenticity, to say 'wow, are you sure this is just a movie? it looks so real'. All this makes it very hard for us to do it with a production company. They want scripts. This and the movie's dangerous anti-system concept are the main reasons why we need and ask for people's support."

REVELATION 20K FOR 20 YEARS: HELP AN ICONIC AUSTRALIAN FEST!

Revelation Perth International Film Festival has been championing screen culture in Australia for two decades. Over the years Revelation has also been a wonderful friend of A Night of Horror and Fantastic Planet Film Festivals: with program director Jack Sargeant being at various stages both a programming consultant for ANOH/Fantastic Planet and sitting on the ANOH jury; and Revelation hosting a "Best of" A Night of Horror shorts in 2008, and presenting the Western Australian premiere of the festival's first feature film anthology (produced with Deadhouse Films) A NIGHT OF HORROR: VOLUME 1 in 2016.

The synopsis for the incredible sounding film follows:

INVOLUTION tells us the story of Hamming and Liv, a couple living in the future. A future that’s reality is a far cry from the one we live in today. The Earth has been sent out of control, affected by a cruel and inhuman mechanism that turns back Darwin’s theory of Evolution... Every person gradually starts to feel animal instincts: uncontrolled aggression, protection of offspring, spontaneous sexual desire. All this creates chaos on the planet and leads directly to the extinction of mankind. Hamming meets Liv right before these horrifying events. And it seems that nothing can stand in the way of their relationship. However, quite soon, Liv disappears, and Hamming has to make an important step – to face the world endangering his very own life in order to find her. Hamming clearly does not fit into the outside world, as his previous life up to this moment was private and as comfortable as can be. Each event means overcoming his internal fears, but he is not going to stop until he finds Liv.

CALL FOR ENTRIES - AUSTRALIA'S OLDEST AND PREMIER HORROR & SCI-FI FILM FESTIVALS

Australia's oldest and premier fantastic genre film festival celebrates its eleventh anniversary this year. Today it announces its 2017 call for entries. “We're very proud of our ongoing commitment to independent fantastic genre cinema”, says A Night of Horror International Film Festival director Dean Bertram. “By maintaining our original pledge of showcasing films submitted to the festival - instead of sourcing the majority of films from sales agents, distributors, and other festivals, which has become the norm of the festival circuit - we will continue to provide an accessible outlet for emerging filmmakers.” 

Filmmaker Ursula Dabrowsky agrees. She has had two submitted feature films screen at A Night of Horror – FAMILY DEMONS (2009) and INNER DEMON (2014) - both of which acquired distribution as a result. “Without a doubt, A Night of Horror has been a massive leg up in terms of my success as an Australian horror filmmaker, and as far as I’m concerned, will continue to be one of the best ways to start off a horror film’s journey into the world," says Ursula.

In 2017, A Night of Horror will again be taking place in conjunction with Fantastic Planet, Sydney Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Festival. Together they provide Australia's leading showcase of independent fantastic genre films. Combined, the festivals screened over 100 films in 2016 (24 features films, and 80 shorts and music videos).

Each festival retains an independent program and its own specific award categories. Both remain dedicated to presenting Sydney audiences with a stunning showcase of the latest in independent horror, sci-fi, fantasy and cult cinema.

NEW U.S. FILM FESTIVAL FROM FOUNDER OF AUSTRALIA'S A NIGHT OF HORROR & FANTASTIC PLANET

MidWest WeirdFest is a new U.S. film festival founded by Dr. Dean Bertram, the founder and festival director of Australia's two leading genre film festivals: A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Fantastic Planet, Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival.

The inaugural MidWest WeirdFest will run March 3-5, 2017 at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

“MidWest WeirdFest is a cinematic celebration of all things fantastic, frightening, off-beat, alternative and just plain weird”, says festival director Dean Bertram. “A film festival that not only champions and showcases independent genre cinema - horror, sci-fi, fantasy and thriller - but one that welcomes all types of underground film. From experimental and avant-garde to offbeat documentaries.”
